What to Wear Wednesdays: Shop Your Closet

One of my New Year’s resolutions is to shop more conservatively this year. I adore clothes and putting together outfits, but the problem is, when I head out to scan the sale racks, I forget what I already have hanging in my closet at home.

So this week, I’m putting together three outfits from pieces — all under $100 (and most under $30) that I already have.

You can try it too! Consider a spring floral dress with a snuggly cardigan and earthy booties. Throw on beige sweater tights if you need a bit more winter warmth. Or go for a sweet lace dress paired with a fierce moto jacket and black leather boots. Or grab a pair of baggy boyfriend jeans, roll to show off a little leg, and pair them with a slick blazer, a basic tank and stiletto booties. The options are endless; the key is to look at everything you have with a new eye.

Travel Tuesdays: My Travel Uniform

I travel a lot — for book tours, for The Daily Buzz (where I do frequent travel pieces) and just for fun, to see family and friends. Over the years, I’ve pared my traveling outfit down to a science. Here’s what to wear:

My travel uniform

  1. A warm (but lightweight and easily packable) cardigan in a neutral color: I go for cashmere camel.
  2. A long black top and black jeggings or heavy leggings: The key here is to be comfy (without having to tug and pull pieces up or down), but also to be able to re-wear each item of airplane clothing during your trip. These are both staple wardrobe pieces.
  3. Aviator sunglasses: Always cool. Perfect for hiding tired eyes and even for catching some sleep on a long flight.
  4. A big scarf: Go for something that coordinates with your sweater and can be re-worn during your trip. Bonus points if it’s big enough to double as an in-flight blanket.
  5. Uggs: There is no piece of footwear that is as comfortable on a chilly plane. Hands-down. And they’re great to walk around in at your destination, unless the weather is very warm, in which case, you can ditch them for an easy-to-pack pair of flat sandals.
  6. A structured bag: Your outfit will be comfy and casual, but an upscale bag (don’t forget your iPad and other in-flight entertainment) ties it all together.

Happy travels!

What to Wear Wednesdays: Mary Poppins Chic

Last night, my wonderful boyfriend took me to see Mary Poppins as part of the Broadway Across America series in Orlando. It has long been one of my favorite Disney movies, but seeing it live on stage was a whole new level of magic. So in honor of everyone’s favorite nanny, let’s take a look at how we might style a present-day Poppins. I particularly love the Disney charm bracelet, which features Mary’s shoes, handbag and umbrella!Mary Poppins

Style Thursdays: Work to Date Night

For Christmas, my boyfriend’s wonderful parents got me this lovely dress from Alfani Petites. It’s sleek, black and knee-length and is completely work-appropriate, but paired with some black pumps and a statement necklace (such as this one, from Anne Klein, which, incidentally, I also got for Christmas!), it’s also perfect for a night out. So here’s what I’ll be wearing this month for a perfect meeting-to-cocktails look. Now if only I could get my legs to look like this model’s…. Back on the elliptical!

Style Thursdays: Team Spirit

With my alma mater (The University of Florida) currently ranked in top 10 in NCAA basketball and in the top 3 in the BCS poll (college football), I’m feeling a surge of Gator pride. I love to wear my team colors proudly, but the further I get from my college years, the more I realize that orange and blue sweatpants and hoodies are no longer the way. Here’s how I’d style a grown-up rooting-for-my-team look, centered around a Victoria’s Secret PINK slouchy tee. Feel free to substitute your own team…. although, just so you know, my Gators are the best. 🙂

Travel Tuesdays: Dreaming of Paris

Merry Christmas, folks, and don’t forget to download my free Christmas gift to you: THE SNOW GLOBE, the short story prelude to THE SWEETNESS OF FORGETTING (my most recent novel — an international bestseller), here! And since most of the story (and half of the book) takes place in Paris, let’s chat today about the City of Light:

Paris Dec 2012

Paris is, hands-down, my favorite place in the world. There’s something inherently magical about the City of Light, which is perhaps why it has featured heavily in two of my novels: The Sweetness of Forgetting and The Art of French Kissing.

At Christmastime, I always find myself dreaming of the travel plans I might make in the upcoming year. I’m hoping to make it to Europe this spring to help promote the launches of the international editions of The Sweetness of Forgetting in the UK, Germany and Spain. I generally find it impossible to be in Europe without hopping over to Paris (a cheap and easy Eurostar ride from London). Here are just a few things I’m looking forward to doing:

  • Visit my friend Lauren Elkin, the author of the fabulous novel Une Année à Venise.
  • Shop!! (This guide is a great primer.)
  • Follow in the footsteps of The Sweetness of Forgetting’s Rose, by using this map.
  • Picnic underneath the Eiffel Tower, after shopping for wine, cheese and fruit along Rue Cler.
  • Indulge in fondue (and wine in baby bottles!) at Le Refuge des Fondues.
  • Have a drink at my friend Jean Michel’s bar, Le Valois, near Moulin Rouge.

In the meantime, I’ll be bringing Paris home by using these tips:

Style Thursdays: Holiday Visits

I live in Orlando, so during the holidays (and the summer too!), relatives and old friends tend to descend on my city. I suspect it’s the siren call of the theme parks (especially now that the new Fantasyland has opened at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom), but whatever the reason, I’m thrilled to have visitors from all over the country (and, in fact, from all over the world).

Just last week, my friends Robin and Brian dropped in from Atlanta with their adorable two-year-old son, for his very first trip to Disney World. They invited us over for lasagna and wine the night before they hit the Magic Kingdom, so I wanted to put together an outfit that was stylish (Robin is, after all, a world-class photographer!) but also comfortable enough to lounge around their rented condo in. Voila! Here’s what I came up with: a reliable outfit of skinny pants, polished boots, a drapey cardigan and a blouse roomy enough to conceal a penchant for going back for seconds on lasagna night.

What I Want Wednesdays: Let’s Go Ride a Bike

This year for Christmas, Jason and I are giving each other cruisers to ride around the neighborhood. Jason’s an avid cyclist, but the bikes he already owns are expensive and specific; he has a triathlon bike, a mountain bike, etc. It’ll be nice to have a pair of inexpensive bikes to ride to dinner (at places like Maxine’s on Shine) or happy hour (at places like Cityfish). Here’s what I’d wear with mine!

Style Thursdays: The Writing Life

As a novelist, I work from home most days, when I’m not traveling for book signings or research. When I meet people, and they realize that my office is literally in my kitchen, I know they often visualize afternoons spent lounging in pajamas. Admittedly, there are days when I don’t change out of sweats until noon! But most days, I try to put something cute, comfortable and snuggly together, so that I’m both fashionable and comfortable while I write. A typical day’s outfit might look a bit like this:

What I Want Wednesdays: Holiday Shopping Edition

In the last two weeks, I think I’ve logged more time at the mall than I have in the entire last quarter combined. As I shop for my friends, family and boyfriend, I can’t help but ogle the things I’d like to buy myself in the after-Christmas sales this year. Here’s just a sample of what’s on my wish list. What’s on yours?
